The Australian Agriculture community is anchored in the work of Food Agility CRC, a Cooperative Research Centre that brokers, designs, and delivers digital and data innovation programs for the Australian agrifood industry to improve profitability and sustainability.

Food Agility administers the Australian Agriculture Traceability Protocol (AATP), a free, open, and scalable traceability and transparency framework that meets the safety and sustainability requirements of domestic and export markets. The protocol provides digital traceability solutions that help supply-chain stakeholders meet their obligations and communicate credible sustainability information.

The AATP serves four main groups: regulators seeking to combat greenwashing and improve export market access; industry participants meeting supply-chain due diligence obligations; software providers enabling customers to participate in digitised supply chains; and certifiers providing verifiable documentation of ESG compliance. It is supported by a published specification, guidance materials, a registration system, and an open GitHub repository and Slack community.

Within a UNTP implementation context, this community can help Australian agrifood stakeholders map on-farm production, property records, movement and processing events, assurance status, market-access requirements, and environmental credentials into interoperable digital credentials. This supports stronger paddock-to-plate traceability, more efficient compliance checks, and better data reuse across producers, processors, exporters, retailers, certifiers, and regulators.

The community contact is Prof David Lamb, Deputy CEO & Chief Scientist at Food Agility CRC. See his profile for background.

Pilot Implementations

The AATP is being proven through a series of industry case studies spanning red meat, horticulture, and grains.

  1. Beef: EUDR Compliance:

An investigation into the export of Australian beef products to Europe in accordance with the proposed European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

    Open case study

  2. Beef: Farm Sustainability & Traceability:

Trialling a scalable, digital sustainability reporting framework to help beef producers track, verify, and share their environmental credentials.

    Open case study

  3. Cherries: Cold Chain Integrity:

Showcasing the art of the possible using the AATP to help growers digitise and link verifiable credentials to exports, providing greater transparency to trading partners.

    Open case study

  4. Canola: Biofuel Market:

How the AATP digitally links sustainability and traceability claims to consignments of grain, using established regulations in international markets.

    Open case study

  5. Grain: Supply Chain Harmonisation:

A GRDC-commissioned investigation into how information exchange in grain supply chains could be improved through harmonisation.

    Open case study

Note: The links in the tables below point to early AATP implementations and reference material. They will be updated to point to formal UNTP register entries once UNTP v1.0 is released.
